I Hate Report Cards

Dear Parent,

The computer program that we use for creating report cards requires me to enter a numerical grade for your child.  By manipulating the numbers as prescribed, the computer and I have somehow determined that a 73 will appear on your child's report card after the words Spanish 1.  I'm not exactly sure what it means, but I can tell you what it doesn't mean:

It doesn't mean that your child has only a 73% chance of being successful in this class, or in the world.
It doesn't mean that your child has mastered 73% of the material that we have been working with.
It doesn't mean that your child has completed 73% of the assignments given.
It doesn't mean that your child has been paying attention 73% of the time.
It doesn't mean that your child is a better student than 73% of his peers.
It doesn't mean that I like your child 73% of the time that he is in my room.
It doesn't mean that your child has a 73% chance of passing the state exam in June.
It doesn't mean that your child participates only 73% of the class period.

And it will never tell you his sense of humor can light up a room in another language or that he is willing to volunteer to be the center of discussion for our story.  It will never let you know that he knows all of the lyrics to the songs we sing in class or that he is exceptionally kind to the kid who sits next to him whose parents haven't been able to provide him with the paper he needs for class.  It will never let you know that he can write poetry with only a few words or motivate the entire class with one enthusiastic challenge.

Hopefully, I will get a chance to tell you these things at sometime during the year.  Right now though, I'm sorry, but I have to start correcting papers and entering grades for the five week reports coming up.  Have to give that computer something to work with....

with love,
Laurie
