More Important

The greatest gift that my students have given me is insight.  Thanks to some incredible kids I have learned (and try to remember) that...

Students are more important than Statistics.
People are more important than Lesson Plans.
Interaction is more important than Intellect.
Memorable is more important than Memorized.
Patience is more important than Punishment.
Focused is more important than Frenetic.
Time and Tempo are more important than Scope and Sequence.
Hope is more important than we can possibly imagine.

with love,
Laurie

I think that you have the first statement exactly correct. Patience does have limits. Intelligent, caring ones. Boundaries are vital, for us and for our students.

NOT having boundaries can be cowardice. It can also be ignorance, immaturity or a deep fear of being rejected.

Each of us has to learn what our own boundaries are...and more importantly why we have them.

In the classroom when students cross those lines we must respond as professionals. In order to do that, we must strive to not take their behaviors personally and to have appropriate consequences.

I still believe that there is no appropriate role for punishment in the classroom.
