T shirts
When I first started teaching, my principal gave me some great advice: Students need you to be their cheerleader, in and out of the classroom. He encouraged me to go to see them play sports, perform in concerts, transform themselves into characters on stage. A colleague of mine tries to see one competition for each sport each season. Another colleague has never missed a concert. It means a great deal to the kids.
I didn't really understand that until I started to go to my own sons' events. Soon the students began asking me if I would be coming to each game. Was I coming to the show again tomorrow night? I had no idea that they even knew that I was there. But they did. And they really didn't care that I don't know anything about football. :o)
But let's be realistic...I can't go to every game, show, concert and competition. So this year I'm trying another way to support their interests. Our staff has an unofficial policy to wear our Marcus Whitman Staff tshirts every other Friday. When the drama club was selling tshirts to the kids in the club, I bought one. And another one from the football team. And the swim team....and so on!! So now on Fridays, when I can, I wear a t-shirt to support the kids and their activities.
It's been fun.
