One Way to Create An Embedded Reading...a Simpler Version
For those of you who teach more novice classes, the same approach can be used with simple structures.
A. Choose phrases: wants to watch, can't watch, has to go
B. Write a simple piece using the first phrase:
Lavinia wants to watch a movie. She wants to watch the movie Avatar. She wants to watch a movie this weekend. She wants to watch a movie with her friends. But there is a problem....
C. Add details using the second phrase:
Lavinia wants to watch a movie in a movie theater. Usually she can't watch a movie in a movie theater because there is no movie theater in her town. So, many times Lavinia watches movies at home on television. But Lavinia really wants to watch the movie Avatar. She can't watch Avatar at home. She really wants to watch Avatar in a movie theater with her friends. It is a good day! Bill Gates has built a new movie theater in her town. Lavinia really wants to watch the movie Avatar in the new Bill Gates' Theater with her friends. But there is a problem...
D. Add details using the third phrase (hint: use the copy and paste function, then add sentences. Saves time and energy!!):
Lavinia wants to watch a movie in a movie theater. Usually she can't watch a movie in a movie theater because there is no movie theater in her town. She has to go to the town in the northeast, or she has to go to the town in the southwest to go to a movie theater. So, many times Lavinia watches movies at home on television. First she has to go to Blockbuster for a movie. Then she has to go home to watch the movie. Some days her father is watching WWE Wrestling and she has to go to her grandmother's house to watch a movie.
But Lavinia really wants to watch the movie Avatar. She can't watch Avatar at home. Avatar is new. Avatar is not at Blockbuster. Lavinia has to go to a movie theater. She really wants to watch Avatar in a movie theater with her friends. Usually she has to go to the other towns. After school Lavinia has to go home. She talks with her mother. She says, "I want to see the movie Avatar. I can't watch Avatar here. I have to go to another town. Can I go?" . Her mother says, "I have a surprise! You don't have to go to another town. It is a good day! Bill Gates has built a new movie theater in own town." Lavinia really wants to watch the movie Avatar in the new Bill Gates' Theater with her friends. But there is a problem....
Only students with a 100 on the Spanish test can go to the Bill Gates Theater. Lavinia has to study!! Lavinia wants to study with her friends. They all want to get a 100 and go to the Bill Gates Theater to see Avatar. Lavinia has to study Spanish vocabulary. Lavinia has to study Spanish verbs. Lavinia has to read stories in Spanish. Lavinia has to write stories in Spanish. Lavinia has to study a lot!!! Because she really wants to go to the theater to see Avatar with her friends!!
